GROOMING — 7 MIN READ
That one word covers a lot. Here's what soap smells like when there's nothing artificial in it.
Grab whatever's in your shower and look at the ingredients on the back. Somewhere in the list you'll find the word "fragrance", or "parfum" if it's an expensive one.
That word can legally stand in for a whole blend of synthetic aroma chemicals, and the manufacturer doesn't have to tell you which ones. It's the only line on an ingredients label that doesn't actually tell you anything.
Most people never give it a second thought. Fair enough. But a soap workshop in Dublin has spent the last five years doing things completely differently, and if you've got four minutes it's worth knowing how.
A blend of lab-made aroma chemicals. The word covers the whole mix, and the individual ingredients don't have to be disclosed. Cheap, strong, identical in every batch.
Made by cold-pressing or steam-distilling actual plants — bark, flowers, leaves, fruit peel, roots. The orange scent comes out of orange peel. The pine comes from pine trees. They cost a lot more, and the scent is softer, because it's the real smell of the real thing.
To be clear, synthetic fragrance isn't going to hurt you, and this isn't a scare piece. But there is a difference, and you can smell it. Synthetic fragrance is designed to be strong out of the bottle, and it disappears off your skin within the hour. Essential oils are softer. They come up properly in hot water, and they fade the way you'd expect a natural smell to fade.
The Black Stuff uses essential oils and nothing else. All twelve scents in the range are built from them.
The smell is only half of it. The other half is that tight, squeaky feeling your skin has after a shower with most commercial soap or gel. People assume that's what clean feels like. It isn't. It's what stripped skin feels like.
Anyone who makes soap runs into the same problem early on. Coconut oil is what gives a bar its cleaning power and its big lather, and it's also drying on skin. The big manufacturers mostly settle it in favour of the lather, because lather is what sells in the ad.
The founder of The Black Stuff spent months of failed batches on this problem; testing seven or eight bars in a single shower, €30,000 deep in ingredients before earning a euro back.
The formula he ended up with, which every bar in the range is still made on, is more than half olive oil and shea butter. That's the part that leaves your skin feeling good after a shower instead of tight. The other oils are in there for specific jobs: coconut for cleansing and lather, castor for a nicer feel in the hand, and sustainably sourced palm to make a harder bar that lasts longer in the shower.
There's an unwritten rule that you don't put more than 2–3% shea butter in a bar, because it's expensive. Nobody told us the rule. Ours is well over 20%
After that, every batch sits on a rack for weeks to cure. A cured bar is harder and milder, and it lasts a lot longer in the shower. There's no fast version of this worth doing.
So that's what's in the bar. As for what they smell like, there are twelve answers to that.
The Black Stuff makes exactly twelve mainline soaps. Six are scrub bars, with things like oatmeal, pumice and charcoal in them for when you've actually been sweating. Six are smooth bars that go easier on the skin. Here's the lot.

My 5 Year Journey in 30secs
Time to come clean about something. This is our page. I'm John, I own The Black Stuff. I started it at my kitchen table in January 2021, in lockdown, and made every bar myself for the first year and a half, 54 at a time — until my wife pointed out I'd turned our house into a soap factory, and I moved it out.
I'd rather just tell you that than dress this up as a magazine article that happened to mention us. If you've read this far, you now know more about soap than most people who've used it their whole lives, and you can make your own mind up.
The question we get asked more than any other is which soap to start with. The honest answer is that nobody can tell you. A scent description only gets you so far. You don't know Atlantic Pine Tar is your bar until it's been in your shower for a week.
So we made a box with all twelve in it and stopped trying to answer the question.
Everything we make. About eight months of showers.
A full Irish is the breakfast with everything on the plate. Same idea here: all twelve mainline soaps, our four bestselling deodorants, and the four accessories that make bar soap easy to live with.

With twelve scents, odds are there'll be one or two you don't love. That's fine. Trying the lot is the whole point. Any bar that isn't for you, we'll swap for more of your favourite. Free, no returns, no forms. Keep the ones you didn't fancy and give them to someone you half-like.
And if your Soap Locker ever breaks, we replace it. Forever.
The details: one swap request per Full Irish, as many bars as you like, within 90 days. Yes, all twelve if you somehow hate all twelve, although at that point we'd want a chat. This guarantee is on top of your statutory rights, which aren't affected.
“My skin felt fresh and.. calm? I habe already recomended it to a mate who shares similar issues with their skin. I haven't felt dry or itchy after using it. 10/10, would lather again.”
— Chris, Sweden
“Great smells, a nice sense of feeling clean after the shower (compared with mainstream soaps i.e Dove)”
— Rob, Bentham
“Great product, really fresh smell which stays with you through the day, leaves you feeling clean and your skin feeling great.”
— Nick pope, Shropshire
“The fragrance is very present and unique, the soap lathers well and leaves a nice clean feeling on the skin.”
— Patrick, Berlin, Germany
Every bar in your box was made by hand about twenty minutes from my house. If anything's wrong with your order, my team will sort it. My actual team, not a call centre. — John
A bar lasts about three weeks of daily showers, so the twelve cover roughly eight months. The deodorants go about 60 days each, so four is around 8 months also. The dish and the locker are why those numbers hold up. A drained bar lasts about twice as long as one sitting in a puddle.
That is what the guarantee above is for. We swap it for your favourite, free, and you keep the one you didn't like.
Six of the twelve are smooth bars, and Fresh Lime and Aloe is made with 100% aloe juice for exactly this. Nothing in the range uses synthetic fragrance, which is the usual culprit.
Ireland and EU orders ship from Dublin, UK orders from London, US orders from Tennessee and Canadian orders from Toronto. Full delivery details are on our shipping page.
No. One box, one payment, nothing recurring.
One last thing before you go.
The Black Stuff has a Facebook group with over fifteen thousand people in it, and they run half the show. They vote on limited editions, they name products, win trips to Ireland, and giveaaways and they let us know very quickly when we get something wrong. Would love for you to join also.
If you get The Full Irish, you get first access to every limited edition drop. We do seven a year, and full-range owners hear about them before anyone else. So the box is really the start of it. You find your scent, and then you stop missing the seasonal ones.
Twelve soaps, four deodorants, and the kit to make it all last. Made by hand in Dublin by people who'd rather cure a bar for a month than fake a smell.
That's the full irish.
