10 reasons mechanics stopped scrubbing their skin raw at the end of a shift

It lifts the engine oil and grease that shower gel just smears around — without leaving your skin cracked and raw by Friday. One bar: hair, body, hands, the lot.

“Read this before you bin your Swarfega.”

Literally covered in sh1t 😂 the coarse grit is class and actually lifts oil from skin every bit as well as industrial Swarfega-style soap. ✓ Verified Steven, Ballymoney, NI · Mechanic & part-time farmer Verified · updated this week

TLDR: one bar that lifts the grease, washes you head to toe, and ruins shop-bought shower gel for you forever.

10 reasons to make the switch

Reason 1

It lifts the grease. First wash.

The grit grabs the oil that shower gel just smears around. Work it in with the Silverback cloth and one wash at the end of a shift gets your hands properly clean — no scrubbing mitt, no nail brush.

The coarseness of this soap does what normal shower gel does not and leaves me fully clean at the end of my day. My partner appreciates the white bed sheets staying white. Patrick, mechanic, Doncaster
Reason 2

Real grit, not plastic microbeads.

Volcanic pumice and oatmeal do the scrubbing — the same blend in the Atlantic Pine Tar and Celtic Tiger bars. Tough on grease, no microplastics down the drain.

Reason 3

Rough enough to graft. Soft enough head to toe.

Swarfega shifts the grease and leaves your skin cracked. This does both jobs at once — real grit lifts the dirt, but it's gentle enough to be your everyday wash, hair to feet. Not a once-a-week scrub at the sink.

Reason 4

No synthetic fragrance. No 'Sport Blast'. No bullshit.

Scented with essential oils, not lab chemicals. Herbs and citrus, cedar, a hit of menthol — grown-up scents, not a 16-year-old's gym bag.

Reason 5

Made in Dublin. Cold-processed, 50 bars at a time.

Hand-cut and hand-labelled by 35 people in a Sandyford workshop — not stamped out in a factory you'll never see.

Reason 6

Cured 3–4 weeks, so it lasts.

The long cure makes the bar rock-hard: 21+ showers out of one, and with the teak dish to drain it, it won't turn to mush like cheap handmade soap.

Reason 7

It's your whole shower — not a tin by the sink.

One bar does the lot — shower gel, hand wash and the harsh degreaser, all gone. That's why the bigger kits add the cloth that works the lather in, the dish that doubles each bar's life, and a locker for the gym bag. And because clean is only half the job, the Boss kit throws in three colognes — smell as good off the clock as you scrub up on it.

Works well to remove oil/grease... and I come home from work smelling of BO a lot less. Exfoliating and cleaning, while not being too rough on the skin. Cameron, Scotland
Reason 8

Zero risk: 99 days to love it, or your money back.

Not happy with your kit? Tell us within 99 days and we'll replace it free or refund you — your call. No questions, nothing to post back. What's your shower gel ever guaranteed you?

Reason 9

Made by a lad who started in his kitchen.

John started this alone in lockdown, 2021. Still founder-led — he reads every review and answers customers himself. Try getting that from a tin of industrial cleaner.

Reason 10

4.8 on Trustpilot. Mechanics in 14 countries.

Rated Excellent across 420+ reviews, and used by tradesmen from Doncaster to Canada. The lads don't switch back.

Beats Swarfega hands down. Extremely effective at cleaning hands heavily contaminated with oil — and at the same time gentle enough for the most sensitive skin, without irritation or burning.

As a man that works in a dirty environment, the soap is unreal for cleaning even the toughest of grease and grime. Smells amazing and lathers perfectly.

The grit in the Atlantic Pine Tar works great for getting rid of all the grease, dirt and coal dust I usually get covered with at work.

Smells amazing, the rough texture helps as being a welder I get very dirty. I actually feel clean when I get out the shower — with some shower gels I have to really scrub to get the dirt out my skin.

These rough soaps work great against grease and have truly natural ingredients. After trying this deodorant I wouldn't feel comfortable using anything else.

It is very difficult finding quality pine tar soap at affordable prices. I have been satisfied with how my soap not only smells and feels but also its effectiveness at removing machine grease.

— John, Founder, The Black Stuff
Made by a Dublin lad. Used by mechanics in 14 countries.

I started this in my kitchen in January 2021. No lab, no marketing department — just bars I'd actually use myself. Five years on there's 35 of us in a Sandyford workshop turning out about a million bars a year, still cold-processed 50 at a time. If the first bar you try doesn't become your new favourite, we replace it free. That's the deal.

Straight answers

Will it actually shift engine oil and grease?
Yes. The rough bars — Atlantic Pine Tar, Citrus Cedarwood and the Celtic Tiger — use volcanic pumice and oatmeal to lift it. Work it in with the Silverback cloth and you won't need a scrubbing mitt.
What's in the bundle?
Four soaps (Atlantic Pine Tar, Citrus Cedarwood Scrub, The Celtic Tiger and Fresh Lime and Aloe), the Atlantic Pine deodorant, the Silverback exfoliating washcloth and a solid teak soap dish. The Boss tier adds a 5th soap, a 2nd deodorant, a travel Soap Locker and a 3-pack of colognes with atomiser.
How long will the kit last?
Each bar gives 21+ showers, so the 4-soap bundle is roughly 3 months of daily showers — around 50c a wash. The 3–4 week cure makes our bars much harder than typical handmade soap, and the teak dish stretches them further again.
What if I'm not happy with it?
You've got 99 days. We'll replace it free or refund you in full — whichever you prefer. No questions asked, nothing to post back.
Where does it ship from?
From whichever of our warehouses is closest to you — Dublin for Ireland and Europe, London for the UK, Tennessee for the USA, Toronto for Canada. Most orders post within 48 hours.
Will the grit wreck sensitive skin?
No — the grit is natural (volcanic pumice, oatmeal), not plastic, and the bars are made to be gentle enough for daily head-to-toe use. Atlantic Pine Tar and Fresh Lime and Aloe are both suited to sensitive skin, and reviewers with sensitive skin regularly say exactly that.
Is this a subscription?
No. One-time purchase, no strings, nothing recurring. If you want more when it runs out, you come back because you want to — that's the whole business model.
What does shipping cost?
Flat rate by region — roughly €5.95 in Ireland, £4.50 in the UK, $6 in the US, CA$10 in Canada — and free over the local threshold (the Boss kit ships free in IE, UK, US & Canada). Exact cost shows at checkout before you pay.
